Jock the red deer
Every visitor to the estate is likely to cross paths with a very special character – Jock, our beloved red deer. Now seven years old, Jock’s story is as heartwarming as it is unique. Born right here on the estate, he faced a tough start to life, found tangled in a fence at just three days old with a broken leg.
Luckily for Jock, Dougal discovered him in time and took him in. He was bottle-fed, mended, and nursed back to health—not in a barn, but in the garden kennels, sharing space with the dogs and quickly becoming part of the family.
Though he now roams with the estate’s red deer herd, Jock remains far more human than hind. With his unmistakable personality and curious nature, he often shadows Dougal throughout the day, “assisting” in all manner of tasks with a gentle nudge or inquisitive gaze. He’s as much a member of the team as any two-legged helper—just with a bit more antler.
